Finding Genuine Support and Motivation at the Empower Her Future Campaign
By: Lindelwa Mayinga, Edited by: Lunga Dweba, 14 September 2024
August is an important month in South Africa’s history. As a woman, the campaign reminded me of the women who marched to the Union Buildings in 1956 paving the way for me to find myself in spaces that empower and unite women. Being in the same room with Female CEOs and leaders, amplified my inner voice that; it is possible, I can also be a successful CEO.
Before the event, I applied for the campaign and received an email that I was in the top twelve and had to submit documents, I was excited and couldn’t stop imagining being in the top six.
‘Umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu’ is a phrase that crossed my mind during the Empower Her Future Campaign. As a young black woman who is still navigating her way in the business space, I will forever cherish the opportunity Lamatsamo Holdings gave me by being part of the final six participants of the Empower Her Future Campaign.
I HAD MADE IT TO THE TOP SIX
After submitting the documentation, I was informed that I had made it to the top six, I couldn’t believe it but after reading the email countless times, [it finally sank in] that I had been chosen. Preparation started and I appreciated how the team ensured I was on board with everything.
THE EVENT
On the 30th of August, I arrived in Witbank, and I was welcomed with warm smiles at the venue. The venue, décor, and food met all my expectations. I love food, so I appreciated that Lamatsamo Holdings ensured everyone was fed before and after the event.
Ms. Bonisile Fortunate Shongwe, The Managing Director of Lamatsamo Holdings warmly welcomed us with inspiring words. She alluded that women entrepreneurs face unique challenges in accessing funding, networks, and resources, making it even harder for them to succeed. By prioritizing funding for women, this event aimed to address the marginalization that women face in the business and mining world. The Managing Director further urged businesses to support women-led businesses in the country and to open up spaces for women to join and make a difference.
Another thing that stood out to me was a kind gesture that the MC did, and this is something that I’ve never seen; she gave everyone in the room a piece of white paper with a finalist’s name on it to write an encouraging message to the finalist. That was such a special and very heart-warming gesture. The gesture spoke so much of the kind of business Lamatsamo Holdings is.
Though the event would only give 3 finalists funds, I didn’t have the pressure of being in a competitive mode, and this is one of the special and beautiful things I loved about the event.
I was the last finalist to do a presentation, and the audience was warm and excited to hear what I had to say. My eyes lit up with joy when I saw how attentive each listener was, and that boosted my confidence.
Though I didn’t get a top three spot, I got a lifetime experience, got invaluable advice from reputable business leaders, and most importantly, I was part of an event that was intentional about changing my life.
As the event concluded, I left with a sense of hope and excitement for the future of my business. I gained a network of people who want to see me reach milestones in my business.
We were there to get inspired and see how we can further establish our respective businesses. I was inspired when each finalist presented their business to the guests.
